Expert Session I
Strategy and OSOSS
Jeroen Visser is going to talk about the Open IT Strategy. The formulation of a dedicated Open IT strategy is the first important in the transition towards an Open platform and vendor independent IT Infrastructure that enables the flexibility that is required to meet the requirements of the demanding and fast changing economy of today. An Open strategy will help you “take the right initiatives for the right reason.” The goal of an Open IT strategy is the formulation and execution of an integrated set of choices based on the formal decision to adopt Open Standards and create an Open IT infrastructure. It identifies the essential content, and the configuration of activities and assets necessary to create and sustain an Open IT infrastructure. The purpose of this presentation is to define what we mean by an Open IT strategy, its primary components, and its benefits. We will discuss why it is needed, what is in it, how to build one, how to manage it and above all the benefits of having one.
Jeroen Visser, Vice President, Holland Open Foundation

*Engaging cybercrime: */*Divide and Conquer*/*
Malware incidents are leading to increased financial loss by misusing bank accounts or confidential (corporate) information. The software products’ market share and the percentage of malware targeting those products are closely related. Nevertheless, many organizations continue to utilize market leading software. This maximizes the return on investment of Internet criminals. But spreading the risk for malware is just as relevant as for a shares portfolio.

Scale matters: how an avalanche of free software code is putting the corporate user in the driver seat
The common factor between Amazon, BBC, Credit Suisse, Disney, Exxon, through Facebook and Google all the way up to Yahoo and Zyxel - they all run many if not all of their core processes on free software. Productivity in the long term is driven by a close integration of fairly common technologies tailored to drive unique business processes. At the price point where free software operates these days, you simply cannot afford others to limit your growth potential and scalability. Free software is part of the modern survival kit for any company that relies on IT for competitiveness as it provides low level access to future incremental innovation from within the organisation. Michiel Leenaars explains why companies should significantly invest in free software - before the competition does.

Business Case I
Healthcare specific Open Source software is up to the task
In many markets OS software yet has gained ground. With the development of certified and userfriendly OS for healthcare, e.g. O3-DPACS and EMR IntraZIS, this market is about to change next. Good for either patient and healthcare, because with OS software healthcare will save money and gain quality and transparency.
Gerrit Krediet, Head ICT, St. Antonius Hospital and Open Source expert

Business Case II
OS: the hype is over
When choosing new software, it seemed to be a hype choosing only Open Source Software. Now fundamentalism has faded, it's time for a real comparison: why choose open source software? How can you ask for 'good software' without asking for things you will never do, like looking under the hood of the coding of an application?
Hessel Rosbergen, Project Manager Internet, City of Leeuwarden

Business Case III
We watched the World Cup – thanks to SOPERA
Implementing new IT technology gives you choices with regards to the approach taken. Either you can implement just the bare minimum to achieve your basic needs or you can take a more comprehensive approach and use state-of-the-art technology to take a bigger step forward. Thanks to open source software, the use of state-of-the-art technology is not coupled with dramatic software investments, which year after year become a burden. Getting the right architecture in place is the best insurance policy against rising costs and technology obsolescence. Using open source software is now the accepted norm for IT infrastructure and architecture projects.

Remember the Spartans! Or, introducing open source against overwhelming odds
Finally! Success looms for your open source strategy. According to Eurocommissioner Neelie Kroes open source isn’t a dirty word anymore. Increasingly, open source evangelists appear to be well-dressed and well-behaved young men and women, who speak the proper business lingo and understand the power of a good old-fashioned hype. You have no qualms of leaving them out of the boiler room and into the board room. It's time to reap the open source harvest. Are you sure? In his talk, Jan will point out various challenges that stand between you and the fulfillment of your open dreams.
Jan Stedehouder, writer, columnist and journalist on Linux and open source software, author of 'Open Source Jaarboek', 'Basiscursus Ubuntu' and 'Probleemloos overstappen op Linux'.
