One-day Workshop on Corporate Portfolio Management
Portfolio management is proving to be a pervasive and critical process for creating value by enhancing strategy execution and optimizing business value. Some companies such as American Express are beginning to take portfolio management to its logical conclusion, a corporate-wide process for determining the optimal allocation of all discretionary investments across the entire corporation. The workshop is rich with case studies from the pharmaceutical industry, the oil & gas industry, several high-tech companies and a major financial services company.

Morning workshop-Advanced Project Portfolio Management (PPM)
09:00-12:30

In the morning workshop, we will briefly review the basics of portfolio management and then show several examples of state-of-the-art project portfolio management. The types of projects discussed include investments, such as new product development, IT, oil & gas exploration and marketing, and assets, such as marketed products and producing oil & gas wells. Key topics:

  • Portfolio management objectives and metrics
  • Value-based portfolio management: process, metrics and displays
  • How to evaluate risky opportunities: Philips HDTV
  • Optimizing investment portfolios over a single constraint-pharma case
  • Optimizing asset portfolios over multiple constraints-oil & gas case
Afternoon workshop-Business Portfolio Management
13:30-17:00

In the afternoon workshop, we will focus on applications of portfolio management to allocating resources across multiple businesses competing for resources. We will draw on numerous examples from the presenter’s experience as Chief Portfolio Advocate at HP and also the published experience of American Express. Key topics and case studies:
  • Similarities and differences between PPM and BPM/CPM
  • Market portfolio management: An HP application
  • Portfolios of businesses: HP Imaging and Printing case study
  • Portfolios of new businesses: IBM and HP examples
  • Corporate-wide portfolio management: American Express example
  • A vision for the future of portfolio management
The afternoon will conclude with a vigorous Q&A and discussion between participants and the presenter about where to go from here.

About Michael Menke:
Dr. Michael Menke is an expert focused on the front end of the value creation chain: identifying, evaluating, selecting and acquiring the best opportunities to create value. He links the external complexity to the composition of the internal Project Portfolio by addressing a major issue in PPM: are we doing the right projects?
Michael worked seven years as a Chief Portfolio Advocate & Business Strategist within Hewlett Packard (HP) and has been a management consultant on strategic business issues in the Pharmaceutical Industry for over 30 years. Together with his colleagues from of the Enterprise Portfolio Management Council (EMPC), he coauthored the latest book on PPM.
